FTP and FTPS as a Windows Network Drive

What is FTP and FTPS?

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is one of the oldest and most widely supported protocols for file transfer. FTPS extends FTP with TLS encryption — unlike SFTP, it is a separate protocol built on top of FTP rather than SSH.

FTP and FTPS via Rebex Drive

Rebex Drive maps an FTP or FTPS server directly as a network drive in Windows Explorer. No dedicated FTP client is needed — any application that can open files from a drive letter works with your remote FTP storage out of the box.

Server Compatibility

Rebex Drive connects to a wide range of FTP and FTPS servers, including:

  • IIS, FileZilla Server, vsftpd, ProFTPD, and others
  • Web hosting and shared hosting providers (most still offer FTP access)
  • NAS devices and network appliances with FTP support

Connection Features

  • Plain FTP (unencrypted) and FTPS (explicit and implicit TLS)
  • Active and passive mode

Typical Use Cases

  • Managing files on a web hosting account
  • Accessing legacy systems or NAS devices with FTP support
  • Situations where SFTP is not available
